Find HSE Breastfeeding Services
Midwives, public health nurses and breastfeeding groups will help you and your baby learn to breastfeed in the early days and weeks.
Talk to your midwife or public health nurse about any breastfeeding questions you have. You may be referred to an HSE infant feeding/lactation midwife or nurse for further support.
The HSE provides free access to infant feeding/lactation midwives or nurses, where needed, in all maternity hospitals and within most public health nursing services. The infant feeding midwives/nurses employed by the HSE are IBCLC’s.
A lactation consultant is a healthcare professional that is certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners (IBLCE) who specialises in breastfeeding or chestfeeding. International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are the highest accredited healthcare professionals specialising in lactation. The HSE provides free access to IBCLCs through many maternity units and the Public Health Nurse network.
