ALCI Spring Study Day 2025 – A Resounding Success!

Report By Maria O’Sullivan IBCLC, ALCI Council Secretary 24/25.

The ALCI Council gathered from March 7th to 9th at the Midlands Hotel, Portlaoise, to host our Annual Spring Study Day virtual to all attendees. With an incredible lineup of speakers, the event was a great success. ALCI’s President, Mairead O’Sullivan, opened the study day with a warm and inspiring address to our delegates. We were delighted to have sold 206 tickets and to have 121 online participants throughout the day.

Our first speaker, Yzelle Watermeyer, presented Wonder Women: The Metabolic Changes During Pregnancy and Beyond, offering valuable insights into the physiological adaptations of pregnancy and postnatal period.

Next, Veronica Daly and Nicola Byrne joined us live from Cork to discuss Gestational Diabetes in Pregnancy and the innovative combined breastfeeding classes they have established for women with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in CUMH.

Following a short coffee break, Shurron Rosales delivered a powerful and thought-provoking presentation on Recognizing Ableism in Society and the Health System, highlighting the importance of disability allyship in breastfeeding and beyond another very thought-provoking presentation.

After lunch, Suzanne Carney provided practical tips and tools in her engaging session on The Role of Therapeutic Procedures in using lymphatic drainage and therapeutic ultrasound in management of Lactation issues. Therapeutic Ultrasound has now become a tool used by many IBCLC's in Ireland in aiding reducing need for pharmacology intervention.

Our final speaker, Dr. Naomi Dow, challenged conventional thinking with her presentation, It’s Not Thrush – Rethinking the Candida Narrative in Lactation Management, leaving us all with much to reflect on.

It was a fantastic day of learning, discussion, and connection. Another who still wants to review our Spring Study Day 2025 can do so by accessing the link sent directly to your emails or you can purchase additional attendance link available until 8th April 2025.

We look forward to welcoming you all to the Midlands Hotel, Portlaoise, for our Annual Conference Sept 2025!

Dated: 21st March 2025.
