To become an accredited IBCLC, one must be eligible to apply and sit an examination in person at an approved centre, or at home by Live Virtual Proctoring.

Pathway
There are 3 pathways to choose from, however at present in Ireland most people come through Pathway 1
Pathway 2 & 3 require 300/500 direct supervised clinical practice hours and greater academic hours and mentorship-for further details see
All candidates must have completed eligibility criteria and provide evidence in 4 key areas.
- 1. Recognised Health Professional Registration- Dr. Nurse, Midwife, etc-
Or an accredited Breastfeeding Counsellor
To include training in 14 health Sciences areas-check link for full details
- 2. Minimum of 95 hours of Lactation Specific Education within the last 5 years. Attendance at Study days or conferences (incl. 5 hours “communication skills”)
- 3. Minimum of 1,000 lactation specific clinical practice hours within the last 5 years. (working with mothers and babies, specifically with Breastfeeding /lactation concerns)
- 4. Confirm adherence to the IBCLE Code of Professional conduct for IBCLC
ALCI Educational Directory
ALCI is delighted that you are interested in learning more about the very worthy qualification of International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). As you may know, this credential is awarded by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). All the details are on their website and specific questions should be directed there, as the awarding body. The IBCLC qualification is recognised internationally.
